Born in Italy in 1870, Dr. Maria Montessori became the first woman in Italy to graduate with a medical degree. Known today as the Montessori Method, Dr. Montessori originally introduced her teaching at a school for special needs children. Her method was evident and in 1907 she opened her first Montessori School for non- handicapped children.
A Montessori Classroom is peaceful and productive with a roomful of children. The children may work independently or in groups.
Each child is free to choose his/her work in the classroom and given individual instruction adapted to fit his/her needs or interests. The teacher encourages self-discipline, concentration, self respect and respecting others.
The main value of the Montessori Method lies in the self-discipline, self-motivation, independence and love of learning that the children attain.
